Mikko Koivu Avoids Serious Injury

from Bruce Brothers of the Pioneer Press,

Mikko Koivu stepped out of the Wild dressing room at the University of British Columbia on Friday with a slight smile on his face, a nasty scar on the underside of his chin and the realization he was fortunate to be standing there.

“It’s just stitches, and it will heal,” Koivu said, “so that’s a good thing.”

Koivu survived a frightening experience the night before when the skate blade of teammate Dany Heatley, who had been knocked off balance, carved a gash in Koivu’s skin during Minnesota’s 2-1 shootout victory over the Oilers in Edmonton.

Teammates were relieved Friday that their captain seemed in good spirits and was not hurt worse than he was.

“A couple inches the other way and it could have been really bad,” linemate Devin Setoguchi said. “Thankfully, he’s all right.”

The cut came within millimeters of one of the jugular veins in Koivu’s neck.

That would be unbelievable if he managed to kill another teammate.
