Mikko Koskinen Contract Extension Is Official

A release from the Edmonton Oilers,

The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen to a three-year contract extension, with a $4,500,000 AAV (average annual value) through the 2021-22 season.

Koskinen, 30, is in his first season with the Oilers and leads the team with 14 wins, a 2.78, a .911 SV% and three shutouts. He is one of 19 goaltenders in NHL history to record two shutouts in his first three starts for his new team.

Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli says, “We are excited to have signed Mikko to a three-year contract extension through the 2022 season. Mikko has a lot of experience as a number one goalie and has performed well both internationally and for our club.”
A 6’7”, 202-pound goaltender, Koskinen joined the Oilers after five seasons in the
Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

The native of Vantaa, Finland played with SKA St. Petersburg (KHL) from 2014-2018, winning two league championships (2015, 2017). Over four seasons with this organization, he accumulated 65 wins, a 2.03 GAA and a .923 SV%. In four post-seasons, Koskinen had 46 wins in 67 games, with a 1.59 GAA and .939 SV%

Koskinen has also represented Finland internationally in four major events, including the 2018 Winter Olympics, the 2014 and 2016 World Hockey Championships and as an alternate goaltender at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Koskinen won silver medals at the 2014 and 2016 World Hockey Championships. In 2016, he was named "Top Goaltender" as well as being named to the tournament all-star team.

He was originally a second-round draft pick, 31st overall, of the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Draft. He appeared in four games for the Islanders in 2010-11, posting a 4.33 goals against average and a .873 SV%.
