ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Michal Kempny to a four-year contract, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. Kempny’s contract will carry an average annual value of $2.5 million.

Kempny, 27, a native of Hodonin, Czech Republic, recorded three points (2g, 1a) in 22 games with the Capitals last season. The Capitals acquired Kempny from the Chicago Blackhawks for a third round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Prior to joining the Capitals, Kempny had seven points (1g, 6a) in 31 games with Chicago.

During the Capitals Stanley Cup run, Kempny recorded five points (2g, 3a) in 24 games, including three points (1g, 2a) in the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.

In 103 career NHL games, the 6’0”, 194-pound defenseman has recorded 18 points (5g, 13a) and 48 penalty minutes.

Kempny was signed by Chicago as a free agent on May 23, 2016.

Prior to joining Chicago, Kempny recorded 21 points (5g, 16a) in 59 games with Avangard Omsk of the KHL. Prior to his stint in Russia, Kempny recorded 60 points (21g, 39a) in 213 games with the Czech League.
