Wow.  Can’t believe at this point he wouldn’t wait to see how teams are shaping up, injury-wise, through training camps and preseason.  You’d think a desperate contender who loses a defenseman for a month or two may be able to put together a better package than what BUF comes up with.

The bigger question to me is:  why did BUF agree to a AAV of as much as they did at this point?  I certainly at this point didn’t expect anyone was going to give him anything over say 1 year at $2m max.  It comes across as kind of a panic move from both BUF and Franson’s camps, honestly.

Franson at 3.3 is better than Smith at 2.something.. 2.25? 2.75? whatever. it’s still better.

I highly doubt Franson would have signed for that value. Realistically, they are getting a hell of a deal for 2 years at the AAV reported. When you look at the kind of money guys like Green, Oduya, et al are getting, Franson will bring a lot of value for his cap hit.

Franson at 3.3 is better than Smith at league minimum.

Franson is kinda… I don’t know.  But when you compare that cap hit to Smith, Quincey and even Big E… I would take Franson over those guys.  He’s extremely adept at holding the puck in at the other teams Blueline, and has a cannon and provides offense.  Also a huge body though not the most physical.  But when he is, he can actually knock guys down/over.  He’s a bit of a mess defensively, but then you get Smith… so hey smile  Just surprised.  He’s an interesting guy to see how it plays out.  Advanced stats (hate that name cause they aren’t all that advanced) guys love him cause he’s a positive possession player who provides offense, so at that AAV, he could be a steal, but yet, nobody was really after him (in part due to being up against the cap I understand for a lot of teams).  So we shall see.

On a side note, buffalo continues to get more respectable and will not be easy games for Detroit this year… which kind of sucks.

Franson was asking too much money back in July. He was seeking a 4-5 year deal that would pay him close to $25 million.  The market was not interested mainly because of his lack of production in Nashville.

For Buffalo they’re receiving a top 3 defenseman at a 4/5 price. Good for them, bad for the Wings.  If Ken Holland continues to sit and sit and sit on his hands and not unload any of the talent in the pipeline the Wings in 2-3 years could be on the outside looking in on the playoff picture.

We’ll see how he does with Buff, but keep in mind - he was absolutely horrible in Nashville at the end of last year.

To me it seems like a fair contract for both parties, considering the risk of him staying at his Nashville ways.

Correct. I thought for sure Nashville would resign him, but his play indicated otherwise.  smile
