NEW YORK (December 20, 2010)—New York Islanders forward Matt Martin has been suspended for two games and will forfeit $6,792.12 in salary for delivering a blind-side check to the head of Phoenix Coyotes forward Vernon Fiddler in NHL game #475 on December 18, the National Hockey League announced today.
Martin’s fine is based on his average annual salary and is calculated under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident occurred at 6:23 of the first period. Martin was assessed a minor penalty for charging.
Martin will miss games Wednesday against Tampa Bay and Thursday at New Jersey. He is eligible to return Sunday when the Islanders host Montreal.
