Should be suspended or at least fined, but I’m expecting nothing. After all, it’s Matt Cooke. Some will say he had it coming, he deserves it, etc.

And what does Sid have to do with this. Why does everything go back to Sid? Seriously. So sick of seeing that in every Penguins-related clip on here, whether Sid is involved or not.

Dumbass play by Carlson.  Definite suspension territory.

Matt Cooke moved at the last second in a way where he could have been found in a vulnerable position, but that’s not what happened. Carlson almost missed him and made sure he jammed his elbow out so he’d make contact.

I see this one as fairly similar to the Deveaux hit, except Carlson had an even smaller window of stupidity where he stuck his elbow out in that same dumb reflex action.

If Deaveaux got three games for that, I’d expect one or two here.

That has nothing to do with this.  You’re better than that, JJ.

Terrible, terrible hit.  Suspend him for 5 games.

He broached the topic, it’s fair game.

*#$%@& it though… big point is that this is the 2nd head shot delivered to Cooke this season.  The first one wasn’t punished. This one should be.

He didn’t.  The Wings fan before him did.

And you’re right, this needs to be punished.  It wasn’t an accident, that’s for sure.

Damn right.  Fuch him.

I wonder if he spent time in the dark room or did the Pens rush him out so that he could get the game winning goal because they don’t give a good god damn about their own players’ safety?

Should be a suspension, though will probably be a fine.  As far as I know, Carlson has no history.  Hopefully I’m surprised.  The fact that it’s Cooke shouldn’t matter and hopefully won’t.

That’s a great question.  A great place to ask that question would the NHL league offices, CBC, TSN, ESPN, and THN offices and ask them why everything has to be about him.  Because they are the ones that created this monster.  It sucks doesn’t it, always having that be thrown back in your face?  Now imagine how much it sucks for the fans of the 29 other teams to have it in their face constantly…

As for Cooke… I’ll be honest.  I could care less if any punishment is meted out for this one or not.  Because it’s Matt Cooke, and there’s something to be said for comeuppances, karma, and paybacks.

Primis, thank you for your input.  This is the perfect place to bring this up as I make the decisions for what CBC covers.  EvilPens makes the decisions for TSN and Flashtastic runs the NHL offices.

At our next what are we going to cover for hockey meeting we will bring up your concerns and address them.  You have done a great service to yourself and the hockey watching country.

Thank You

The one that is missing is Jaws running & charging 2 guys in a row early in the game & no penalty or nothing, He will cripple or kill someone & then the NHL & media will get tough on him.

Well I actually agree with you, anyone that says they don’t envy the Pens and their fans for having the best player in hockey to root for and compete for their team is a liar or disingenuous at best.

But c’mon, you are the troll around here. wink

This is a definite suspension. Matt Cooke is a douche but that isn’t relevant. When assessing a play the only name that should matter is the one on the jersey of the guy making the dirty play, not the one on the victim. Cooke has gotten away with a lot, but that doesn’t mean this hit is right. And if Cooke steps out of line again like he has in the past, he’ll get what’s been coming now that “Colie” isn’t spinning the wheel of judgment any more.

And I’m sorry, but Sid is fair game on this topic. When the best player in the game misses almost an entire calendar year due to a concussion, his name will and should be brought up in almost all situations that involve hits to the head or concussions. I’m really okay if you want to paint it as envy, but I would say the more important part about using Crosby in these discussions is that it continually draws attention to a serious issue the game needs to be better at addressing. It is sad but true—nobody pays attention when a generic fourth line plugger gets one to the chops and is out for six months. People hardly paid attention to semi-stars like Savard and Bergeron. Given that Crosby had to suffer through a nasty head injury, we might as well take the silver lining that is his stardom shining a light on a growing problem.

You forgot Shanny! The guy who will be handing out a suspension for this hit on everyone’s favorite Penguin Matt Cooke.

Because it’s Matt Cooke, and there’s something to be said for comeuppances, karma, and paybacks.

He’s served his suspensions, he’s not free game. This isn’t old time hockey anymore as we can all clearly see. Enforce the same across the board, only way to clean it up.

He’s served his inadequate suspensions. wink

But I actually agree with you, that’s irrelevant here. Carlson needs to be suspended for what he did, whether he did it to Matt Cooke or Dupuis or Neal or any other player is not relevant to the decision.

Like you said RR—enforce the same across the board. If Shanny continues to do that, when and if Cooke steps out of line again, he will be punished appropriately. For people whining about Cooke “deserving” this hit, they need to realize, the only way Cooke will ever get what he deserves for his dirty play is if this hit is suspended stiffly the way it should be, to continue to set precedents and examples of what plays are unacceptable.

Yes, of course.  It all makes sense, now!  Because you’re so sick of hearing about Crosby, you’ll bring him up in any thread related to the Penguins…even if there is no mention of Crosby!

Alright, sorry…

This is good.  If you don’t suspend guys for hits like this just because it was on Matt Cooke or Sean Avery or Chris Neil, that will send the message that it’s okay to give those players “what they deserve.”  Suspend everyone - for his like this, especially - and things will change.  Accidents happen but, like I said before, this wasn’t an accident.

And, Cooke has completely changed his game.  Sure, it’s only been 20 games or so, but he’s playing a noticeably different game.  Obviously things can change, but as of right now I feel pretty good saying he’s learned his lesson.  Finally.

In the late 90’s / early 2000’s, I had the Red Wings shoved down my throat. ESPN wouldn’t play any game unless it was the Red Wings / Avalanche or Red Wings / blank or Rangers / blank.

I used to bitch about that all the time. Alas, it was before I turned into a loser who comments on blog posts so I had nobody to bitch to.

It works in cycles gentlemen. The saturation of all things Crosby is probably worse than the Red Wings saturation in the late 90’s, and a lot has to do with the “get everything in 1 second” technological age we live it.

I don’t feel bad for Red Wings fans hearing about Sid every time they turn around. Payback is a bitch.

At first I thought this deserved 2 games (roughly).  But upon looking at it a few more times (especially his feet) it DOES look like Carlson tried to not hit him or at least slow down/lessen the blow.  Don’t ask me what that flailing right arm is all about though.
