Matt Cooke gets a major and a game for boarding Adam McQuaid

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke received a major penalty, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct for boarding Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid. As the CBC's Glenn Healy posited after the fact, McQuaid peeked over his shoulder, saw Cooke coming and chose to turn toward the boards to play the puck, but this is still textbook boarding-into-the-numbers and it's still a completely unnecessary hit:

The fact that McQuaid returned makes the likelihood of a supplemental discipline slim to nil.

Matt Cooke hasn’t changed a bit no matter how bad Pen(i)s fans want it to be true.  He’s a first rate piece of shit.

Oh look at that.  The Pens being dirty after the period ends.  Is Luigi going to write another letter threatening to leave this garage league again?

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
And more times than not it either goes unpenalized or is a minor penalty and anyone who tells you different, IMO, doesn’t watch many games.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
I’m OK with Matt Cooke getting minor or major or suspension for McQuaid hit, but let’s at least be honest: that’s not an uncommon NHL hit.

For the record, dear reader, I would have preferred 2 or 4 for boarding. I think the refs called the perceived injury as well.

Honestly, if everyone here is a CLOWN, why bother coming here? Why get your dander up. Go to a pens friendly sight if you want it to be all puppies and ice cream.

EP, easy with the shots at other members and the blogger too.

Make your point, no need to call someone out because of their opinion.

CLOWN George?

Cooke was given a 5 and a game for the hit.  George and Kukla’s routinely report on majors from any game.  Do your parents know you are up this late?

MeNwhile, is Boston the best series team in the business. There game Lways seems ugly, and they are almost always outclassed in talent, but they just don’t budge from their game. Oh, and the Pens can’t seem to try going a little higher on Raask. Everything is ice level.

They look just like they did against Philly last year. Garbage. No team D.

LA-Boston final.

I think this game is too weird to project from.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for this series. Out west I could care less.

I hear ya MoreShoot. Pens had great chances too. Could have been much closer. I just think the Pens don’t have solid team D and I’m not sure how Vokoun will hold up. Plus, Cindy shouldn’t be act like a tough guy against Boston. It sure as hell didn’t work against Philly, even if they scored 5 goals on Bryz.

Actually the official call unless gets changed on Cooke was checking from behind.

He cannot make that hit. The player cannot defend himself.

That’s what the commentator said. My response is bullsh!t (and I’m guessing that someone like Mickey Redmond would agree with that).

The player could have easily defend himself because he saw the hit coming. He simply chose to not defend himself. Instead, he chose to play the puck. As the old saying goes, “Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.”

I get that the league wants to protect unsuspecting players from hits from behind. But when a player knows a hit is coming and willfully chooses to ignore it, he has to accept the consequences.

This is fricking hockey. It’s not some damn ice-skating competition.

As expected no further #NHL discipline regarding #Pens Cooke hit on #Bruins McQuaid.

Hope Chara concusses that criminal cooke in this series.
I’m sure they haven’t forgotten the fact cooke ended Marc Savard’s career.

Meh. Neither of these hits look particularly interesting to me. I guess eliminating hitting altogether would be the next logical step for the “new” NHL.

Pretty much my thoughts as well. Not even counting the obvious one(Franzen), there were a TON of hits just like that in the Wings/Hawks series from both sides that didn’t get called.

Very interesting how the officiating changes round to round, series to series, game to game, period to period…
