Markov Out For The Season

MONTREAL  – The Montreal Canadiens announced Friday that defenseman Andrei Markov will undergo a knee surgery on Wednesday, December 8. The surgery, to repair a meniscus and reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), will be performed in Alabama by doctor James Andrews.

“We are very confident that Andrei will be able to fully recover from this injury,” said Canadiens’ general manager Pierre Gauthier.

The 31-year old Russian defenseman will not return this season. Markov suffered a knee injury during a game on November 13 against Carolina at the Bell Centre and missed the team’s last nine outings.

It’s worth noting that this is virtually bang on with what Tony Marinaro was reporting two weeks ago. For those in Montreal who listen to the Team 990, or on Twitter, Marinaro is a must-listen and must-follow in terms of hockey media. His sources know their stuff.

Not to mention he’s really funny and very entertaining.

Why is it that the Canadiens have not out Markov on LTIR?  It’s not like this has been a surprise.  We’ve all known for weeks he’s done for the year (and possibly forever as a Hab).  I have no idea as to why the Canadiens have not placed him on LTIR; therefore increasing their cap space.  Any thoughts?

Everything I have read suggests it is retroactive, and they lost no cap space in delaying it. If that’s then case, I suspect they just wanted to have all the details of the surgery sorted out before announcing it. But I am purely guessing.

Thank you; I did not know it was retroactive,  So, in essence, no need to.  Have a good weekend and enjoy this afternoon’s tilt.
