Kukla's Korner Hockey

The start of the new NHL season marked the unveiling of a summer-long project for the head of the New York Rangers’ Internet operations, Dan David. David, 39, joined the Rangers a year ago, having worked for CBS SportsLine, Rivals.com, USAToday.com and ESPN.com. His task this past summer was to compile a database of every player ever to have worn the Rangers sweater. The resulting “all-time roster” portion of the team’s Web site (newyorkrangers.com) features pictures, statistics and trivia about the 885 players who have played for the team during its 80-year history. With its size and scope, the addition stands as a unique feature among NHL team Web sites, many of which this season are enhancing their features in the wake of NHL.com’s overhaul for the season. SportsBusiness Journal correspondent Allan Kreda recently discussed the Rangers’ project with David. How critical has the Internet become regarding a team’s ability to communicate with current fans and bring in new ones? DAVID: The Internet is all about information and being able to find it quickly. Hopefully, we will be the definitive place for fans of an Andy Bathgate or a Nick Fotiu. We hope this brings people to the site who aren’t necessarily Web surfers.Once again, many teams understand the way hockey fans get their information. Unfortunately, a few teams are still living in the 80's and are doing a very poor job with updating their websites. It will catch up with them and they will be left to wonder, What Happened"!
