from Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland will meet with Maltby later this week, and Maltby’s agent, Anton Thun, said, “I anticipate we’ll have some news by the end of the week.’‘
The club has a standing one-year, two-way contract offer on the table to the longtime Red Wing.
Maltby, 37, has been exploring the free-agent market, but Thun said his client’s preference is to remain in Detroit.
“He’s been with Detroit a long time (since 1996), his family is there,’’ Thun said. “I think we can come to a mutually agreeable contract.’‘

Boy it’d be nice to have him around to possibly call up late in the season, but in the meantime teaching the kids in GR how to play the right way.

would be great to see malts retire a red wing. even if the logo is on the shoulder and not the chest.
i remember when the wings picked him up in ‘96, the red wings announcers (not sure if it was mick) kept saying “not a big trade at all.” as in, he wasn’t a big name player. but considering he had such a huge role in 4 stanley cups, i’d say it was a big effing deal.
