from Shelly Anderson of the Post-Gazette,
It’s expected that Malkin’s agents, Pat Brisson and JP Barry, will begin contract negotiations with the Penguins after the holiday weekend. Those negotiations aren’t expected to be protracted because the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement contains strict guidelines for rookie contracts.
“Everyone knows that Evgeni’s goal is to play in the NHL right away. He has been more than ready to play at this level for quite some time,” Brisson said by e-mail yesterday.
“In the meantime, JP Barry and myself should enter into negotiations with the Penguins relatively soon in order to make this happen for Evgeni.”
from Karen Price of the Tribune-Review,
Officials from Malkin’s former team in Russia, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, have threatened to take the Penguins and the NHL to court if Malkin signs with the Penguins. They have already contacted Alexander Berkovich, a New York lawyer who has previously handled international disputes involving Russian hockey players.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said yesterday that there had been no direct contact between the NHL and Magnitogorsk, nor was he aware of any current legal proceedings involving the Penguins prospect.
Sure, nothing’s happening, legally speaking. I’m sure the Penguins put a high-powered, high-priced lawyer on a retainer just to be on the safe side…
