Madden Still Not Practicing

It may defer some of their salary cap trouble, but it won't help Claude Julien's start as Devils coach. John Madden might not be ready for the season opener, revealing yesterday that he underwent hernia surgery seven weeks ago. "I noticed it during the playoffs and I thought it was a sore groin. I took some time off, and when I started training again, it didn't get better," said Madden, who has been skating lightly apart from his teammates, and not encouraged by the results. "Unfortunately, I waited a little too long. Now we've started training camp and I'm not playing exhibition games," Madden said.
