from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,
Heading into this season, Alain Vigneault and Mike Gillis both spoke enthusiastically about a plan that would ease the workload on Luongo.
The plan, theoretically at least, would keep Luongo fresh for the regular season, but more importantly leave him better equipped to handle the demands of the postseason. That, at least, was the theory and, over the fullness of this season it may yet become the reality.
But 26 games into the regular season, the plan has seemingly evaporated. Twenty-six games in, Vigneault has been riding Luongo like this was 2007 and the goalie was the only chance the Canucks had of being competitive.
That, of course, is no longer the case and that seems obvious to everyone but Vigneault. Some nights, as was the case in Chicago on Friday night, the magic is still there for Luongo. But more often he looks like an average NHL goalie.
The problem is Vigneault can’t seem to get that image of the 2007 Superman-Luongo out of his head.
