Luongo Now A Popular Goalie

from Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province at Canada.com,

If Roberto Luongo had known this would be the reaction, he probably would have announced he’d be willing to waive his no-trade clause years ago.

He should be feeling the love, because it’s coming from just about everywhere.

Even one of his harshest, most unrelenting critics, Sportsnet’s Damien Cox, who once said the Canucks’ “tragic flaw” was building around Luongo, is now advocating the Leafs look at taking a run at him.

That monster contract viewed two years ago as crippling is now “cap friendly.” Hilarious, indeed, especially when you consider the unlikelihood that Luongo would waive his NTC to go to Toronto.

Ballparking on the potential Luongo market, Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman said as many as nine teams could be interested, and as few as five, including the most mentioned destinations, Florida and Tampa Bay.

To the surprise of much of the media, and those fans in Vancouver wanting to send Luongo out of town, there *are* some people in the NHL/media who can actually read statistics. And understand that he has consistently been one of the 5 best goalies in the NHL.

If Luongo thinks the media and fans a re bad in Vancouver, I can’t imagine him landing in Toronto.

And understand that he has consistently been one of the 5 best goalies in the NHL.

Which is great for teams that want regular season success and a failing basketcase in net during the playoffs.

An athletic goalie like luongo will not succeed under the Drop and Block edict as demanded by Maple Leafs goalie coach.
