to me… this one is BS.  Peverley clearly is the one bringing his stick up towards backstroms face… Backstrom then brings his stick up in retaliation and then hits pevereley.  I can bet with almost 100 percent certaintity, that if pevereley does not lift his stick towards backstrom, that backstrom would not have hit pevereley in the face.  It was almost reactionary.

But compare this to the Bouchard stick earlier in the season with similar “stick riding up the other guy’s stick” circumstances.  If playoff games are worth more, and i agree they are to a point, then this one feels like the most correct (or at least consistent) of all the rulings in the post season.

seems like a $2500 play to me… or am I missing something? the precedent has been set, no? hitting someone in the head with an object at the very end of the game in a reactionary way causing no apparent injury by a (star) player who has not had past disciplinary problems = $2500

... so I don’t get this

But Backstrom is moving towards peverly?
And Peverly’s stick comes up, but he never appears to be using his stick in an offensive or aggressive manner?  So what exactly in Backstrom “retaliating” for?

Backstrom is clearly the aggressor in this situation.

The problem with NHL precedent is that it is always wrong, so when they do get it right it goes against everything they have established to date.

Backstrom got a match and should sit a game. There was no reason for him to go after Peverly with his stick like he did even if Peverly did trip Ovechkin. Backstrom is not “that” type of player, but he was reckless with his stick and the fact that he did it after the final buzzer makes it worse.
