Are the Oilers really in such dire cap territory that they need to get rid of him?

Someone else was telling me about how the Oilers were desperate to shed salary.  I’m looking at their numbers and not seeing anything all that bad - at least not related to the cap.  Maybe ownership doesn’t want to pay up to the cap?

Eberle is a bigger “name” obviously but you have to wonder if Tatar is that much worse… Strome hasn’t lived up to potential so to speak…but Tatar for Strome (even Tats+) would have been a nice chance to take.

If the Isles get Duchene too…. thats a nice summer.  Hopefully for them, that lets them keep Johnny T.  And ruins any hope he would come here (not that there is much anyhow lol)

Montreal wants D (they just got Schlemko of all people).... Perhaps we can trade for Galchenyuk…. I think they might want a C back for him, so not sure we can help there… but if they’ll take a D, maybe they’ll take a package around Jensen/XO (Hey he’s french!) or even DDK?

I can dream right.

A lot of people having a fit over this trade, but it seems to be a big yawner.  Two teams trading similar players neither of them wanted anymore

I’m sure Islander fans will yawn every time Tavares feeds Eberle for a goal.

I don’t think so either, but it’s a great opportunity right now, seeing how the whole league is psychologically open to trades right now (yeah sorry, Wing fans). Draisatl and maybe Russell are up for contract. Next year, well, McDavid and Nurse. Tack on a little room for filling out the roster and making a run at one or two free agents, it makes sense to clear some room.

Peter Chiarelli is building his team and moving out the Craig MacTavish players. They move a $6,000,000 contract and make room to bring in a good D-man and get a young relatively inexpensive forward that will be a RFA next year.

Islanders get a really good player to play with Tavares.

Good trade for both teams.

The Oilers salary cap moves are with the future in mind. They have to sign Draisaitl this off season and then there is the record setting contract they’ll be doing for McDavid just around the corner.
