Wow.

Guessing it’s going to be Anze, but maybe DD?

Good move but does this mean that they’ve been trying to trade him without success (dat bigass contract)? Buyout candidate?

DB is gone fo sho. They need help with cap space and Brown is basically a bottom 6 forward now.
I’m sure many teams will be happy to trade for a 30-point scoring rat like Brown.

My money is on DD getting the C.

Wow.  This is news.  Agree that it’ll probably Doughty with Kopitar keeping the “A” along with Greene.

But that salary. I’m thinking they’ve tried to trade him and come up empty. That said, it seems wiser to wait out the draft and July 1, when teams’ needs might change before making this move. Certainly doesn’t augment his trade value when he’s now the “demoted captain of the two time SC champs”.

Would prefer it to be DD as he has the grit that Brown lacked and will stand up when necessary. He doesn’t have the long term contract that Anze does, though so team might not want to get into a Blake-type of situation, though that was a few regimes back.

Hello! Welcome to 21st century! Good to see NHL teams are breakin the taboo of unthinkability of demotion from capitancy.
Boston Bruins may want to do the same thing with Zdeno Chara.
In case Sharks win the cup, whole thing about transferring leadership from Thornton to Pavelski - while keeping them on the same team - may be seen as a new role model on how to deal with a crisis through change in capitancy. Even if they lost, Sharks being in a SC final is a pretty strong case for other teams to “copycat” what Sharks did.

This has been rumored for months and I don’t think it has anything to do with the sharts or if they can trade DB or not. The speculation has been that part of Kopitar’s negotiations with his big contract involved him becoming the captain, i.e. it’s ‘his’ team now. So look for him to be named captain.

And IMO, DD isn’t ready to be the Captain yet. Maybe an alternate? That’s not a reflection of how good a player he is, but he’s just not captain material at the moment. He has grown substantially in the last few years, but there is still a goofy loose canon quality to him. Again, IMHO.

As far as DB’s play goes, I feel he could easily be a top six forward and be very productive on a more offensive minded club in the Eastern Conference. If you’ve noticed, NOBODY really lights it up on the Kings given there style of play.

With all that said, the biggest disappointment as a fan was the Kings not even showing up for the first round of playoffs, which was due in large part to a lack of leadership. I kept thinking throughout the short run that if Kopi really wanted to be the captain, then where the hell was his leadership when we needed it the most?!? I love Kopi, but if that’s what Kings fans can expect from him, and given the talent on the team, then we may be screwed and that was a fun run while it latest.

Brown’s a useful player at $2 million or thereabouts, but he makes triple that and his contract doesn’t end until the next ice age. Other than maybe Clarkson, that’s the worst contract in the NHL. If Lombardi manages to move him, he deserves GM of the year, almost no matter who or what it’s for.
