Live From Philadelphia: NHL 2014 Entry Draft

The countdown is on before the start of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft here at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Members of the NHL Staff, Team Staff, media members and fans are all filtering in to the arena to watch which teams the next crop of NHL talent land.

Uploading it slow on the wifi currently.  If you use Twitter you can follow me @MonicaMcAlister for image uploads.

Don't forget to  tune in tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. on the NHL Network for Rounds 2-7 as well.

How many TastyKakes did you eat?

Not a one. Haven’t seen any - haven’t looked either.  Had a cheese-steak… because… well… it is Philly!

Did the tourist thing this morning with a group of media at my hotel and took a nice 6 mile walk around the city.

Does a city have to have an NHL team to host the draft?  They did the Awards show in Vegas, a non-NHL city so why not a place like Seattle, New Orleans, or San Diego to host the draft?

i was so sure that the canucks were going to trade for 1st overall but looks like they are just going to pick at 6 now.

I was at the 1987 draft held at Joe Louis. It was free admission,  free little Caesar’s pizza and the arena ( if memory serves) was half empty. A small stage and I dont think john Ziegler was booed once.

WiFi here is cutting out on my laptop.

Edmonton Oilers just picked Leon Draisaitl from Germany.  The highest-drafted German in NHL history.

The booing here is deafening - the music too for that matter.

Concessions are open for fans on the main concourse.

I thought it was hilarious at last year’s draft in NJ.  Good showing, fans.

TSN keeps saying Draisaitl is the highest drafted ‘German Born’ player…forgetting about Dany Heatley.

Heatley is a Canadian citizen while Draisaitl is a German citizen.  Probably the best phrasing they have for it right now rather than dragging it out to “German born and maintaining German citizenship…”

Good catch though smile

Vancouver Canucks go with Jake Virtanen.  A Canadian not a Finn as name would imply.
