Lindy Ruff On Protecting The Goalie

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

“It doesn’t matter to me who is on the ice,” Ruff said, delivering maybe the most important message of the discussion. “If someone is taking advantage of your goaltender, you all respond…all five guys respond.”

Old school? Ruff was asked.

“Old school,” he said. “Everbody ropes, everybody rides.”

Saturday’s cross-check of Kari Lehtonen was confusing on a lot of fronts _ like why isn’t it a penalty when you cross-check a goalie in the head? But if one thing comes out of the incident, it will be that the Stars have a very clear message on what to do if someone messes around with their goalie.

more on protecting the goalie but first watch the cross-check to Lehtonen's head below from the Caps/Stars game a few days ago.  The goal was waived off due to goalie interference but no penaly was called on Backstrom.

Ok, how clueless are the analysts that they didn’t notice the cross check to the freakin’ head the first nineteen times they analyzed the replay?
And why didn’t any Stars come to the rescue?
I hope Lindy peeled the paint from the walls in the room after that travesty.
And that should be a minimum of two minutes for the cross check.

It might have convinced the zebras on not calling a penalty, because it was pretty oscar quality stuff

And Backstrom was trying to hit the puck, it was not a direct crosscheck to the head, as the article implies
Sure, it was a penalty, but by reading the article and Ruff’s reaction, you might think Backstrom was trying to take the goalie’s head off…

This probably should have been a penalty, but the officials (two of the better ones) obviously felt the contact was incidental.  The interference was sufficient to make it no goal (and besides, it was put in the net off Backstrom’s glove with a pushing motion and therefor not a goal for two reasons).  I would have given Backstrom a cross-check and an interference penalty and Lehtonen a diving penalty.
