DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired forward Steve Downie from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey.

“Our organization believes that Steve Downie will add grit and skill to our lineup offensively,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He plays the game with an edge and we look forward to seeing the immediate and future impact he can bring to our team.”

“As well, we want to thank Kyle Quincey for his services and wish him all the best.”

If it is Quincey, that’s three defensemen moved in five days.

If true, the Wings must not think very well of this summer’s draft.  But, yeah, I would think that’s a bit of an over-payment.

Kenny blows my mind.  Now Quincey is used to top 4 minutes, good puck mover, experience on the PP, not affraid to shoot.  He’s like a Kindl with NHL experience.  GREAT depth signing for the defence.

I also think this may mean we can count Brad Stuart gone officially.

Also can’t believe it’s a first rounder though but in Kenny I trust

I actually heard this years draft is DEEP but with not a lot of NHL ready talent.  Probably figuring they can get who they want outside of the first and most of the second round.  Or maybe they plan on making some trades draft day moving some prospects around for picks.

Oh, BTW, anyone else remember when Quincey was waived and claimed and then started doing well, having a breakout season a year later and started trash talking about not getting a ring for helping detroit win the cup as a black ace?  Wonder if anyone else in the locker room remembers, not that it matters, those boys wont care and don’t seem to hold grudges

Loaded in the forward corps.  Loaded in the defense corps.  And for all of our misgivings about Conks, loaded in the goalie position.

In Kenny, I trust.

It’s a very late 1st-round pick.

Remember when Troy Brouwer went for a mid-20?

Sebastien Piche goes to TB in the deal too.  He’s with the Toledo Walleye right now and isn’t very likely to make the NHL.

That piece of the move was solely to get Detroit back in compliance with the 50-contract limit (per The Production Line).

Heh.  I don’t know why I do that; I always get that confused.  That’s something telling if the Wings don’t hold on to the first round pick, then it must be a deep draft.  Otherwise, the Wings are loathe to give up their first round pick.

Man, Downie has been a regular on Stamkos’ line for 2 years.  He has hands and grit, and is young.  I honestly would have guessed that he was on the no-touch list.  Weird.  Draft picks are apparently much more valuable than I realize.

Since theres always a couple projected to go in the 2nd that end up going in the 1st, this is basically a 2nd rounder anyways given itll likely be in the bottom 4 picks.  Always good to have depth on D for a deep Cup run which is what this move is all about.

Wow, even with his off again on again improvements the past few seasons, Quincey is not first round material. Late pick or no. On the other hand, this ratchets up the going rate for everyone else looking to be moved.

Well, when you look at all of the now-great players who used to be draft picks, it’s easy to see.

LOL

Nate I think of a lot of that was being on a YOUNG team with about no veteran leadership.

In a structure environment with consistant training and accountability, I think he’ll polish up nicely.  Also GREAT competation for Kindl Ericsson and Smith

I guess.  Look at the ones that don’t pan out.  Look at all the great over-age signings.  Considering that teams need immediate results to be profitable…..I don’t know, I am always amazed that people can think so long term.

Dont’ forget that Quincey still has another year after this one on his deal.  Detroit didn’t acquire a rental here.

Capgeek says he’s RFA. And he’s getting paid like Ericsson. Fine for this year, but if the intent is resigning, I’m not sure if i like that or not.

My guess is this has all been discussed quietly.  It was a very tough decision for the Wings to put Quincy on waivers.  My bet would be that he has already resigned himself to a long stay here and ready to sign the expected home town discount.
