Let’s Talk Jordan Staal

via Bob McKenzie tweets,

There’s a lot of Jordan Staal talk, where his long-term home is (PIT or elsewhere?). Being a year from UFA means he’s driving the bus.

PIT can’t get full market value in trade for J Staal if he’s one and done in the new locale. So Staal ultimately ends up wherever he wants.

I wouldn’t be surprised if all three Staal brothers eventually want to play on same team. Eric, BTW, has four more years on his CAR deal.

Which is to suggest Eric not going anywhere. Just a guess, but if Jordan isn’t a Penguin—not suggesting he’s not—a Cane seems logical.

Bottom line is in 1 yr, it’s entirely his call. That power/influence dramatically impacts potential move this summer.

Jordan has already been behind Crosby and Malkin in Pittsburgh, do you really think he sees himself and only #2 or #3 center (which is what he’d be in CAR too)?

And would Eric risk losing his #1 spot to his little brother, since his play has mostly been disappointing the past few years now?

The Staals don’t actually strike me as the kind that want to play together.  They strike me as quite the opposite.

So then Pittsburgh won’t trade him.

Shero will sit him down and say “there’s no way I can get what you’re worth and you’re going to command a hefty raise on the open market next season… provided you don’t blow it by half-assing things next season. Play hard for us next year, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself.”

There’s no need for things between Staal and the Penguins to get ugly.

I totally agree with j.j.  why would he wanna be a number two somewhere else?  Is he reeeeeally good? Yes.  Has he proven himself a number one playing against the shutdown d lines of other teams??  No.  He talks alot of loving pittsburgh.  Theyll give him a modest raise, and talk crosby and malkin into modest raises as well.  Cba cap will go up, but no need to handicap the team under a few salaries.

Why would Jordan want to join Carolina and sit behind his brother? He could join his other brother and assume a huge role with the Rangers. Why leave PItt to play for a last place team? If I’m the staal brothers and want to all play together it’s going to be on broadway. Between Carolina and the NYR it’s not really a difficult decision.

Agreed with JJ.  I mean, we’ll see.  I would love for the Pens to be able to keep all 3, but also know that possibility isn’t likely.

So he’d go to NYR to sit behind Richards then? I’m not sure of your point on that. And CAR has way more cap space so they could actually pay him what he’s worth/wants.

The way Torts uses his lines is different. There’s really no true number 1 center. Sure Richard’s usually starts but sometimes his ice time isn’t all that much more than whoever is in the middle on the second line. I just think that if Staal really wants to play with a brother the Rangers are more likely then the crappy Canes. I just don’t think Carolina is all that appealing.

Staal makes enough money to live a very good lifestyle. What players want is to WIN. He’s already won a Cup but who would choose more money when you already have enough over another Stanley Cup? His best chance to win again is either on the Pens or Flyers, but Philly is cap strapped. My guess is he stays in western PA with a slight raise and goes on to lift Lord Stanley at least one more time.

Staal to the Leafers! Any other team he’s a 2nd-3rd line C, as a Leaf, first line. Fill the much needed starting center spot on the squad

Has anyone come up with trading Fleury instead ( and getting rid of his 5 million plus salary) and with the freed up monies using it to keep the three headed monster together?  He has been outshone the past THREE playoff series by less heralded goalies and it seems as if teams can find the needed “hot” goalie without paying 5 million per.  Granted the Martin contract kills but there will be no market for him.  Cant the case be made that the Pens are better with the three centers and a Johan Hedberg type goalie than with Fleury and no Staal?

The only way I would unload Staal is for a prospect and a 1/2/3 round pick. Any would do, from Carolina say a 2nd round pick packed with Jeff Skinner sounds enticing.

How about Winnipeg or Minnesota? Staal’s are from Thunder Bay. Close enough smile

Staal had his shot playing as #1 center in 10-11 when Sid & Geno were out for the second half of the season.  How did he do against the top D pairings?  11 goals, 19 assists in 40 games.  So a pace for 60 points, and he mustered 3 points in 7 playoff games.  He’s only a number one on really bad teams.

Per twitter (http://www.1059thex.com/pages/markmadden.html):
Mark Madden ‏ @MarkMaddenX
Staal has apparently said that if Pens trade him, he’d prefer to go to Carolina to play with brother Eric.

I think people forget the family connection. These guys grew up playing together and cheering each other on. Eric is married with two kids, Marc is married and Jordan is engaged. Makes sense they would want to raise their families together. Carolina has Jared Staal in Charlotte too. It’s also important to keep in mind that the Canes have enough Cap space to sign Jordan and several others to very lucrative contracts for a long time to come.
