LeBrun: Pegula May Not Spend To Cap

From Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com,

On the Sabres front, Pegula has agreed to buy the team for $189 million ($175 million in cash and $14 million in assumed liabilities). It’s good news for Sabres fans because the dude has deep pockets (he’s worth around $4.7 billion). But I was also told yesterday it doesn’t mean he’s going to spend to the cap every year. He’s rich because he’s made smart business decisions in his life. Buffalo remains a small market no matter who owns the team.

more, including what GM Darcy Regier told LeBrun this morning, and more Sabres and NHL ownership talk with LeBrun and colleague Scott Burnside.

If I was a Sabres fan, I would be pissed at hearing this. What I get from those comments is that they now have an owner that isn’t fully committed to winning. I see a guy who is more concerned with saving between 5-10 mil and being a mediocre team, rather than spending to the cap and being able to field a competitive team. Spending doesn’t guarantee success, but it’s a good start!  I know small market, smart businessman, blah, blah, blah. But wouldn’t it be refreshing to hear a new owner say, “I know we’re a small market, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to win the cup”. Instead, poor Buffalo fans are going to hear (and experience) the same old tight budget franchise they have come to known.

New TB Lightning owner said he will do whatever it takes to build a winner. I feel sorry for Sabres fans now as it seems this new owner is a hockey guy but sounds like the type that would dive on the floor to pick up a penny if he say one any day of week.
Getting rid of Quinn should help and probably Regier though he is signed on for one more season as GM. Pegula should buy him out. I’ve tracked him GM moves over the years I doubt all of them were because the owner had his hands tied financially. Regier is an average GM at best.
Ruff I think is an excellent bench boss and would like to see him resigned there. Sabres long over do to win their 1st SC.
City of Buffalo badly needs a Championship.
