Leafs Goalie Needs A Nickname

from Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun,

Whether it’s Cat, Cujo or Eagle, you’re just not a bona fide Maple Leaf netminder without a catchy nickname.

Fans weren’t too excited about Andrew (Razor) Raycroft and some names they hung on Vesa Toskala can’t be printed. But here comes James Reimer, whose strong start in his rookie year has inspired people to think outside the box. The first few kids in line at Tuesday’s Hockey Hall of Fame autograph session had the Optimus Reim t-shirt that a sharp-thinking fan re-configured from The Transformers franchise.

“It was very popular,” joked Reimer’s agent, Ray Petkau. “I’ve ordered my own shirt.

Reimer has at least six nicknames he’s carefully considering:

How about “Giving the kid a full season before deciding”?

I wouldn’t want to give my franchise’s goalie a nickname whose eponym has died so many times.

Just give Toronto’s goaltenders a single, rotating nickname: The Sieve.

Kid’s won 20 NHL games and he’s got a clothing line?  Only in Toronto.

When your team hasn’t won a Cup since Al Bundy was clobbering defenses for Polk High, you tend to cling to anything for hope.

It’s funny to read all your reactions… looking from the inside out (as Leafs fan), we roll our eyes at these articles as much as the next guy.  You have to remember to disconnect the media in TO with the team and the true fans - though it can be hard.  To criticize the org or the fans because someone was to give a player on TO a nickname is… well bogus.  We want Reimer to succeed more than anything, bc without him we have no chance at the playoffs…  so the t-shirts and nicknames can be as plentiful as they please, but in the end the org and true fans are focused on the on-ice performance not the gimmicks.

You know, for a Penguins fan to ridicule Leafs fans, that’s a bit like the good looking kids in school picking on the dorks ... Sure, they make an easy target ... but what it says about YOU isn’t flattering.

Look, dude, we haven’t had ANYthing much to cheer about here for too many years now, so what do you expect?

Have the Leafs been pathetic for a while now?  Yes.  Does the media here get their panties in a wad every time Burke passes gas?  Yes.

But it’s also true that things ARE looking up in Toronto, and Reimer is a big part of that.

So, enjoy your last few days of Leaf hating and bashing (yes, you gave yourself away), ‘cause soon this team will be respectable again.  Of course, once the Buds make the playoffs, you can still rant on about how the media are making too big a deal about that.  So, I guess all is not lost.
