Leafs Get To Work

from Michael Traikos of the National Post,

Two days on the job and Randy Carlyle has already made enemies with the Zamboni driver at the Toronto Maple Leafs practice rink. That was the running joke after the team’s new head coach had his charges spend close to 90 minutes chewing up the ice following Saturday night’s 3-1 win against the Montreal Canadiens.

The man cracking the whip, however, did not see the humour in practising hard.

“I don’t know. That’s kind of a normal practice for the hockey clubs that we’ve coached in the past,” Carlyle said. “There’s some things that we needed to work on and in reality it’s probably only an hour’s work.”

In other words: the players better get used to it.

The 55-year-old, who was hired as Ron Wilson’s replacement on Friday, does not have a lot of time to turn this 12th-place team around. So everything has to be done on the fly. That means performing drills at a pace usually reserved for games and practising on a day when the players would otherwise be at home resting.

Good for him.  This team is young, and can take a bit of extra punishment, plus this might actually give them some defensive discipline, so they can stop blaming all over the goalies.  Looking forward to an exciting stretch run, no matter what happens.

Well the goalies suck, so….
But yes, we all wondered what the problem was:  bad tending?  Bad Defense?  Bad structure?  Bad special teams?  Not enough size? etc….

Nope.  The problem was that they didn’t practice hard; a lot of skating will “take some getting used to”.  Not good boys.  Practice hard.  Go figure.
