Leafs Fans- Do You Want Turris?

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

There have been some preliminary discussions on the possibility of a deal between the Leafs and Coyotes although Kurt Overhart, Turris’ agent, may be the driving force in any chats that have taken place.

The cost? Probably Bozak who had more points (32) than Turris last year (25) but in more games and with a minus-29 to boot. Both are right-handed shooting centres and Bozak’s price tag — $1.5 millon for this season and next — would fit the Phoenix payroll more comfortably than the $3-4 million that rumours suggest Turris is seeking.

“(His) position is just so illogical from our standpoint,” said a frustrated Don Maloney, GM of the Coyotes, who also lost pivot Eric Belanger to free agency over the summer.

Turris was the third pick of the ’07 draft behind Patrick Kane and James Van Riemsdyk. Kane has four years left on a deal that pays him $6.3 million per season while Van Riemsdyk recently signed a new extension with a cap hit of $4.25 million for the next six seasons after somewhat of a breakthrough season last year.

It used to be a player signed a contract based on some mix of the actual and the potential. Turris wants a contract based purely on potential. It is absurd to pay this kid anything close to what he is asking based on what he’s done so far.

Burke has had some success seizing on the money troubles of other teams to get value. Something like this probably isn’t out of the question.

His failure to transition to the NHL smoothly notwithstanding, Turris for Bozak favours the leafs pretty substantially.

I haven’t seen Turris play much (if at all), but I am not sure I would want him for more than double the cost of Bozak…

On the topic of Centres, holy crap does Connolly look bad.  I hope to hell he is not this bad once the season starts.

Not necessarily,

Ceiling-wise, sure, but Bozak’s known to be capable of doing the job of ‘top six forward on a crap team’. Turris has potential, but isn’t known to be capable of doing, well, anything. Turris isn’t Myers, who’s probably not worth his $5.5 mil right this second, but is, nonetheless, still a first pairing guy, even in an off-year, like last year. Right now Turris is a first line forward who can’t do that job adequately (or any other, for that matter).

There was a similar situation a few years back in Edmonton, where they traded Daigle for Selivanov, but won on the deal. Selivanov seemingly wasn’t much of a player to get back for a guy who went first overall (basically, Selivanov is a European Bozak), but he scored more and made less money than Daigle would have, so it was a good trade for them.

On the scale of Lecavalier (obviously had the skills, just took a while for him to put it all together) to Daigle (rated wrong by scouts), Turris doesn’t look to me to be on the Lecavalier end.

If Toronto has “4 million dollar” player to trade for Turris, it will be a hell of a deal for Phoenix.
