Through Thursday, 827 games had been played this season. In 655 of those games, one team had the lead going into the third period. In 47 games, or 5.7 percent, the leader going into the third period lost in regulation.
The teams that led through two periods had a record of 552-47, with 56 overtime losses, an .843 winning percentage. Six teams had not lost in regulation in the games they led after two periods. Carolina was 19-0.
