Kukla’s Korner Fantasy Hockey Championship – Thursday Preview!

04/20/2013 at 10:59am EDT

PLEASE NOTE: Do not select any players on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. Due to the tragic events in Boston the Bruins game last night against the Penguins has been rescheduled to this afternoon. This has caused the Pittsburgh vs Buffalo game to be postponed until Tuesday. All Penguins and Sabres players will receive a score of zero as the game they are scheduled to play will not take place. Sorry about the inconvenience.

note- original post time was 4/18/12 at 5:23pm, Don't forget about the challenge, rosters need to be set by 12:29pm ET on Saturday and can you defeat me, the winner of the last challenge?

Thursday Night Plays

Like any night the all mighty question is - which teams are going to find the back of the net? I wish I had a crystal ball but I don’t. What I do know is who’s hot, who’s not, and who you should consider starting tonight.

LW- Alex Ovechkin - $175,000 – Draft Him Now

The price tag is steep. He’s facing a defensive hockey club. Anderson is back in net for the Senators. Those are 3 great reasons to keep OV out of your lineups tonight. But I can’t suggest that with 15 points in his last 9 games. He looks like the guy who was challenging Crosby a few years ago for top dog in the NHL.

C – Nicklas Backstrom - $103,446 – Draft Him Now

Backstrom is Ovechkin’s setup man. He has 14 points in his last 9. Enough said.

C - Brian Little - $69,773 – Draft Him Now

You can consider anyone on this line. Little, Ladd ($110,423), and Wheeler ($96,165) have combined for 23 points in the last 4 games. Little provides the best value based on his price point but you can’t go wrong with any of them. On top of that they face the Carolina Hurricanes who look lost without Cam Ward.

LW - Ray Whitney - $104,659 – Draft Him Now

I know he lost his rookie line mate but with 9 points in his last 5 games he has been a model of consistency for the Stars. The Stars are also facing the Canucks and in 2 matchups this season they’ve each scored 7 goals. Eriksson ($62,189) could also provide strong value as he is subbing in on the top line.

RW – Martin St. Louis - $108,603 – Draft Him Now

St. Louis has been extremely consistent in his old age. While most of us would expect him to slow down he keeps producing. He has 10 points in his last 9 games and with Carey Price expect to start for Montreal he could be lined up for a multi-point game tonight. Price has allowed 12 goals in his last 2.5 games.

D – Cody Franson – $67,641 – Draft Him Now

I wouldn’t have 4 Leafs on my team tonight, but depending on the amount of cash you can spend on defensemen Franson gives you a little more flexibility in staying under the cap. He has points in 5 of his last 6 and is a bargain at his price point.

C – Derek Stepan - $129,441 – Draft Him Now

I like many of the Rangers in their matchup against the Florida Panthers but none more than Stepan. He has 10 points in his last 8 games and has become the most consistent player in the Rangers lineup. Add to that the fact the Panthers have allowed 15 goals in their last 3 games and he should definitely find the scoreboard.
