Tuesday’s Value Plays and Favorable Matchups

I like to focus on teams and matchups where I believe the teams involved have a good opportunity to score 4+ goals. With that in mind let’s dive into the guys I would target this evening.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Washington Capitals

There’s no reason to think this will be a low scoring game. Sure, these teams met twice early in the season and they weren’t major offensive outbursts but much has changed since that time.

Capitals

LW- Alex Ovechkin - $175,000 – Draft Him Now

He’s the most expensive guy tonight but I feel he should be active in most lineups. In his last 9 games he has 12 goals and 3 assists, is +6 and has 53 shots on goal. OV is back, start him!

C – Nicklas Backstrom - $108,226 – Draft Him Now

Every great winger needs a great center, and that center is Backstrom. He only has 1 goal in his last 9 games but the 14 assists make up for it in spades.

Maple Leafs

RW – Phil Kessel - $135,590 – Draft Him Now

Kessel has been making Leafs fans forget about the fact that Lupul is once again injured. In his current 5 game point streak Kessel has 6 goals and 3 assists. The Leafs top line is getting it done.

LW – James Van Riemsdyk - $102,692 – Draft Him Now

His return to the top line has give JVR new life. He has 7 points in his last 6 games and is worth his price tag.

D – Dion Phaneuf - $88,548 – Draft Him Now

I typically shy away from high priced defensemen but Phaneuf is putting up points at a 1st line forward’s pace. He is averaging a point a game over his last 9 and has been a force for the Leafs.

D – Cody Franson – $67,641 – Draft Him Now

I wouldn’t have 4 Leafs on my team tonight, but depending on the amount of cash you can spend on defensemen Franson gives you a little more flexibility in staying under the cap. He has points in 5 of his last 6 and is a bargain at his price point.

New York Rangers vs Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers have let me down far too often this season and I’m going to treat last night’s blowout of the Habs as a fluke rather than things to expect moving forward. The Rangers on the other hand have scored 9 goals in their last 2 against Philadelphia.

Rangers

LW – Rick Nash - $153,730 – Draft Him Now

He’s expensive but might be worth every dollar. Take a look at the box scores against Philadelphia this season. In his last 2 against the Flyers he has 4 goals and 1 assist. Enough said.

C – Derek Stepan - $129,441 – Draft Him Now

In those same 2 games Stepan has 1 goal and 5 assists.

C – Derick Brassard - $80,247 – Draft Him Now

I love the way Brassard has been playing in the last 9 games. And with 8 points in those games he’s becoming a viable fantasy option.

Diamonds in the rough

C – Kyle Wellwood – Winnipeg Jets - $50,731 – Draft Him Now

His ice time doesn’t warrant this type of production but he’s getting many of his minutes on the top line. He only has 13 points on the season but 5 of those have come in the last 5 games.

C – Mike Richards – LA Kings - $85,474 – Draft Him Now

I’m not sure why he’s not at the $100,000 price point yet. The Kings now look like the defending champs and Richards has a lot to do with that having put up 8 points in his last 8 games.

LW – Simon Gagne - $58,747 – Draft Him Now

Gagne is playing on the top line in Philadelphia and has 6 points in his last 7 games to show for it. I’ll take that production for 59k.
