The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6-4, 258-lb defenseman Pavel Kubina from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for LW Jon Kalinski, a conditional second-round pick previously acquired from the Florida Panthers and a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

Between Grossman (who I think went for nothing less than peanuts) and Kubina, the Flyers have done a solid job of at least addressing Pronger’s stay-at-home presence and grit.
It also appears to me that Kubina went where he wanted to go—somewhere relatively close to home. He’s probably going to head back to Tampa this summer, so he can hop back home and see his family on occasion while going on a playoff run in Philly. That wouldn’t have been the case with any Western Conference team to which he could have been traded (cough cough).
Kubina’s not exactly fast but he’s the kind of player the Flyers love in big, strong and somewhat gritty, and he came for a very high second-round pick that is appealing for the Bolts but was a bonus pick for Philly. This is an easy fit for both teams.
