Kovalev and Zherdev Both Turned Down NHL Offers in Favor of KHL

From Sporting News:

Alex Kovalev and Nikolay Zherdev, two talented forwards who signed deals with the KHL’s Atlant Mytishchi in recent days, both say they turned down NHL offers in the process.

The 38-year-old Kovalev, one of the greatest Russian-born players in NHL history and a veteran of the country’s other professional leagues, signed a two-year deal with on July 29.

An unrestricted free agent, Kovalev said he had two NHL offers but turned them down because of the KHL contract’s extra year, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Dmitry Chesnokov.

I don’t blame them.
They probably got offered more money to play in the KHL and now they only have to disappear for 52 games instead of 82.
Good choice. And good riddance to two players with all the tools but no toolbox.

Less games, less travel, more money but no chance at the Cup. Doubt the NHL will miss either of these guys and their disappearing acts anyway.

Really? I always kind of thought of him as an underachiever.Someone whose production never quit matched his skill level.
To me Fedorov is the greatest russian NHL player so far. And he’s nowhere near him. Still the only 50-goal scorer to win the Selke- an amazing season. Kovalev-“one of the greatest” that’s a stretch. I’d say a top six foward, period.

I will miss Kovy. He is my favorite player. I hope he does well in the KHL.
