Kukla's Korner Hockey

As the way fans watch the game continues to change in this information age, we’re seeing all sorts of new ‘arenas’ where fans can compete and win while cheering on their favorite team. NHL PlayAction launched recently, and Big League of PlayAction.tv dropped by Kukla’s Korner to give us some insight into this new age of fan-driven competition.
Paul Kukla: Hi Big League. What’s the driving force behind PlayAction and what can fans expect when they sign-up and play?
Big League: All of our PlayAthletes are posed the same 8 questions, sent by text message to their phone, from which they predict certain outcomes in the game. For example, how many points will Alexander Ovechkin tally tonight? They then make their picks on their mobile giving fans a way to interact with each other by competing throughout the game. The questions keep the game exciting right to the end. Your team may be down 5-0 with 10 minutes left, but you still need to see if your choice, say “Pittsburgh Forward”, will get the last shot of the game. It really adds excitement from the opening face-off to the final buzzer.
The cool thing is that you have a live “Game Jockey” who is watching the game and keying questions based on the action.
PK: Certainly does sounds entertaining. This isn’t just for fun though, is it?
BL: Well, playing the game can be fun on its own. But what’s the point of competing if you can’t win anything? From now until the end of the playoffs, each game’s winner will receive either a $25 Gift Card for Boston Pizza in Canada or a $25 gift card to the shop at NHL.com if the winner is in the US. So you can support your team, compete and win, then have a nice pizza meal or outfit yourself with a sweet new hat or t-shirt.
PK: No kidding. I could really use a new Wings hat. How do fans find out about the game, and how do they enter?
BL: First of all, Fans can play from wherever they are…at the game, at a sports bar, or at home…and they are competing live with fans across North America. We are a partner of the NHL, and we have ads going up at NHL.com this week. In addition, we have partnerships directly with some teams to tell fans about the game.
Here’s a sample graphic that goes up on the scoreboard during every home game at Scotiabank Place for the Senators:
To play, fans simply text the keyword for their team (for example WINGS) to the shortcode 24365 and they are signed up to play. This is something they can do from their seat at the game. After the game they then head back to the site and pimp out their profile, upload a picture, change their username, etc.
You can see the team keywords and how to sign up at PlayAction.tv/nhl.
On-line, fans who are at home can view the live results at the playaction site, see the leaderboard change live, and check out the consensus on the picks.
PK: Finally, Big League? Is that your real name?
BL: Hahaha. Unfortunately not. It’s my screen name at PlayAction.tv. I’m a huge sports fan and run most of the games throughout the season, creating the live prediction and trivia questions for the audience of fans.
PK: I’ll certainly have to check it out. Thanks for stopping by.
BL: My pleasure. Thanks Paul..
