Kings Need To Focus On The Game

from Mark Spector of Sportsnet,

Looking back now, you could sense a smelling of the flowers in that Kings room, as a group of players readied to win the most stress-free Cup perhaps in the history of the game.

We recall Dustin Penner, talking about the pursuit of his second Cup, and how he is able to enjoy this run more. “The jitters, the butterflies you get in this position?” he said on the morning of Game 4. “I’m more enjoying them than worrying about them.”

Well, the enjoyment wagon has left town, replaced by the “Holy-crap-we’d-better-not-blow-this” wagon. The Devils will read about this, and have even more motivation, as if they require any more.

“When your bus has to pull by the 10 limos parked on the road getting ready for the after-party,” said New Jersey coach Peter DeBoer, “that’s definitely motivation.”

Right on cue, that old tennis game has begun, as the two coaches volleyed over which of their sides was under greater pressure to win Game 6.

I would like to see Mike take just one shift in an NHL game then call it “stress-free”. This meme that the Kings run has been easy or “stress-free” has grown tired. Mike might as well wrote, “I didn’t watch the games, so I’m relying on hearsay to report something that is not factually correct.”

Or as Jonathon Quick put it “I thought we were tested pretty hard in the first, second and third rounds… Just because we were able to come out on top it doesn’t mean we weren’t tested. If you don’t think we were tested in those series, you should be covering a different sport.”
