from Dan Barnes of the Edmonton Journal,
Despite being handed a 30-day jail sentence for drunk driving, Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin is not on his way to one of Maricopa County’s infamous tent jails, where most inmates wear pink undies and striped uniforms, eat baloney sandwiches for brunch and are denied salt, cigarettes, coffee and movies.
The 37-year-old Russian may well wind up an unhappy prison camper eventually, but immediately after the sentence was handed down in Scottsdale Municipal Court on Tuesday afternoon, Khabibulin’s lawyer Mark DuBiel gave notice that he will appeal, an act that frees the goalie to attend training camp in Edmonton on Sept. 17, which is his intention, and might keep him out of jail through the entire National Hockey League season.
“It could take months,” GM Steve Tambellini said of the appeal process. “This obviously means the process continues. It doesn’t allow me, unfortunately, to comment on behalf of the team as we thought we’d be able to do, but that’s Nik’s right to be able to (appeal). As far as any discussion of further discipline or actions taken (by the) league, ourselves, obviously that all has to wait.”
