Kerry Fraser Says Refs Must Be Consistent In The Playoffs

from Cathy Dobson of the Sarnia Observer,

“Right now, the game is very fast and it’s hard for young officials without the experience to keep up with the pace,” said Fraser, who retired a year ago as the most senior referee in the National Hockey League….

This season, Brendan Shanahan became the NHL’s head disciplinarian and set a new standard of supplementary discipline, but the officials have not been following through on the ice, charged Fraser.

“In the last three weeks of the regular season, there were three situations on the ice where minor penalties were assessed by referees that resulted in two three-game suspensions and one five-game suspension.

“There’s no equity in that,” he said.

During the playoffs, when emotions are running high, referees have to be particularly consistent so players aren’t confused and they understand what will be called.

“Otherwise, they’ll run the risk of committing the foul thinking they’ll probably get away with it, especially in the late stages of the game,” he said.

Fraser speaka the truth. These young refs now-a-days are brutal. But sadly our good ‘ol buddy Gary won’t do anything about it.

I’ve learned more about the officiating from reading a few of Fraser’s columns than from all of the league’s official communications.  If they’d come out and do Shanahan-style videos (or Fraser-style explanations) of some of the more controversial calls I’d feel a lot better about the officiating, even when it’s awful.

Of course they won’t, since you won’t ever have Bettman (or his designated representative) saying ‘that shouldn’t have been called’ over and over.

*facepalm*  Fraser was one of the most-inconsistent playoff refs of all-time.  WTF would he know about consistency?

His columns this season have also done nothing but reiterate the fact that refs truly don’t get it, and are concerned in themselves and their “brotherhood” first with justice and fairness way, way down the list.

“referees have to be particularly consistent so players aren’t confused and they understand what will be called.”

Way too late…....nothing will ever change, every morning, every fan from every playoff team will have multiple complaints about the officiating. The game is too fast, and the league has no plans to aid the in capabilities of the refs and linesman, nor to admit to or address their insufficiency and ineptitude.

FTFY.  Now carry on, Sunshine and never let the smaller details get in the way of a dishonest and simplistic, generalization.

Before I start, I’ll grant that most of us around here don’t know each other in the real world, and that I’m dealing in the grey area of “internet justice.”  Nonetheless:

It’s pretty weak to attack another member under the cloak of anonymity.  If you’re going to call somebody out, have the spine to stake your rep on it.

What does Fraser’s abysmal history and record as a “consistent” playoff ref have to do with a Detroit agenda?  Detroit’s not the fanbase that hates him most and that he screwed over worst.  I just think he sucks…

But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of pointless trolling.

A guy with Fraser’s rep calling for more-consistent officiating (this is the guy that admitted in his own columns earlier this season that he did not call things consistently and instead applied his own personal feelings for each situation, even so far as granting specific other players extra special leniency)...  is absolutely absurd.

Kerry Fraser Says Refs Must Be Consistent.  <—much better.

For sure the penguins are just as guilty as every other team of interference at the blue line.  I just do not understand why this year in particular, they are allowing this to go uncalled.  What drives me even more crazy, is in the penguins/flyers last game of the year… Letang was actually called for it at the blue line (as he should be) but the fact that it has been basically allowed all year and is now called drives me nuts.

Makes you wonder, are they now going to call it during the playoffs?
