Ken Holland Will Be Working The Phones

Goaltending continues to be a hot topic of conversation in Edmonton, with Mikko Koskinen set to become an unrestricted free agent, Mike Smith unsure of his playing future, and Stuart Skinner continues to progress. GM Ken Holland spoke to the media and admitted that they don't have a true number one goalie as they used guys in tandem. Holland also said he needs to be working the phones to see what they will be doing, and where they are going.

from David Staples of the Edmonton Journal,

Holland said he was proud that this Oilers team had the most points in the regular season, 104, in 35 years.
“I think we made lots of progress. We’ve got more work to do.”

On the reality of the salary cap: Holland said the salary cap means he can’t engage in unlimited spending and announce major signings. “To think that we’re going to go out and make some big blockbuster and have a press conference here. That’s what we did last year with Zach Hyman, right? We got fortunate on Evander Kane.

“Can’t keep this team together. There’s no chance, the team that we just had, I can’t keep this team together because of salary cap. Some people might think, ‘That’s good, get rid of some of those people.’ But it’s the cap world. I’m going to try to make the team the best that I can. I know we got a really good nucleus.”

Kick all he wants. By now he has to be more aware than he was in Detroit near the end when he pulled this non-sense:

Holland is well aware of the speculation that Detroit is no longer a destination for free agents, but doesn’t buy it. He believes that in a salary-cap world, every team is a potential destination because the money is the same.

“The game has changed, players can go wherever they want,” Holland said. “We all have the same money. We made some pitches. Those players chose to go elsewhere.

“I don’t know the reasons we weren’t able to get the players we targeted.”

He’s got 7.1M to spend minus raises due to RFA’s Puljujavi, Ryan McLeod, and 20 goal scorer Kailer Yamamoto. Plus he needs to get a goalie as counting on a 40 year old is asking for trouble even if it is Smith.

Y’all don’t think it is in the best interests of the NHL to see the Rags succeed?

If the Rags play in the SCFs, I can almost guarantee the ratings would be through the proverbial roof.

That’s right, now that they’re eliminated its trendy to hate in the oilers again. A team that made the western final.

Indeed, it was quiet ‘round here when the Oilers won. But Holland has to step up his game this off-season and try to at least get a repeat performance.

Did I sleep through the Oilers or KH winning something? As far as I know 2nd or 3rd losers don’t get Stanley Cup participation trophies. Besides the team with the 1st overall pick in 4 of 6 years finally made the Conference Finals 11 years after getting that 1st pick—-doesn’t seem all that impressive to me.

If it’s trendy to pile on/dislike KH: I’ve been trendy for at least 9 years now…he wasted the last few years of Z & Datsyuk’s careers because of stupid decisions and his league worst contracts set up a massive rebuild that still hasn’t moved into phase 2 (of qualifying for the playoffs again) yet.

Good grief. If you’ve ever been to Edmonton and the surrounding area it’s easy to see why players would choose other destinations.
