Keep The ‘C’ Roberto

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

He’s said he likes being captain. If he doesn’t now, what has changed? And if nothing has changed, then is he not being pressured by the media or the club to give up his ‘C’? A ready-made excuse for a poor year.

Wouldn’t it be better if Luongo had a huge motivation to carry with him every time he woke up this season? Would it be better to have a world and Olympic champion goalie motivated to ram this captaincy controversy right up the media’s backside by winning a Cup or at least performing brilliantly while wea ring a ‘C’?

Wouldn’t trying to become the first goaltender captain in NHL history ever to win a Cup be a nice little extra goal to shoot for? Isn’t that preferable to him standing in front of the cameras and saying, “It was my decision and my decision alone to give up the captaincy.”

Nobody believes that. Why start the season with a farce nobody is buying?

If you need this as motivation, you don’t deserve to be a captain.

I’ve always thought having goalies as captains is a dumb idea.  So is a goalie wearing #1 for that matter.  Simply put, if you’re not available to talk your guys up on the bench during the action of a game and offer advice and leadership, you shouldn’t be captain.

It was a stupid idea when they did it and it’s dumber now that they have seen the results.  Goalies live in their own world they should not be Captain.

Luongo should not be the leader if he can’t support his team.

I like the Canucks and hope they can take out teams like Chicago and San Jose. If Luongo plays well that should be good enough. They should have gave the C to a player.

Putting that pressure on a goaltender is a good idea or a bad idea.

If the goalie struggles it will hurt the team. When a goalie struggles it already impacts the team immensely. That will be double trouble if the he is the captain as well.

Giving the C to a goalie is a little strange. In hockey its only natural for a goalie to fail once or twice a game. All goalies get scored on, when that goalie is your captain and you see your captain struggling, that is even worse to see.

Give it to one of the Sedins, its likely that one of those guys will have a great night. One of the Sedins could set a good example and lead the players in a way that Luongo cannot.
