The Ducks eventually beat Calgary, 6-1, at Honda Center to open their Western Conference second-round series, the ultimate final score being 1-0, as in games, even if this felt lopsided enough to count for more.
While it’s true the Ducks dominated and no one named Ramo – or, for that matter, even Rambo – was going rescue the night for the Flames, the winners weren’t awarded bonus points for style or, more significantly, substance.
“There’s no aggregate score in this sport,” Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. “It’s just one win, one game.”
When the series resumes here Sunday, the Ducks and Flames still will be separated by just that single game, Calgary, remember, reaching this matchup by overcoming an early 3-0 deficit in Game 6 of its series against Vancouver.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau labeled the result “an anomaly,” noting that teams tend to rebound from being blown out with major efforts the next time around.
His counterpart with the Flames, Bob Hartley, agreed with Boudreau’s characterization of the game, which was the more family friendly approach than Hartley saying whatever word he might have chosen as a label.
“We know they’re going to be a lot better on Sunday,” Boudreau said of the Flames. “If we’re not ready to play, the series will be tied.”
