John Gibson Deserved Better In Anaheim's Loss To Nashville

05/17/2017 at 7:53am EDT

from Mark Whicker of the OC Register,

Against all logic, John Gibson seemed OK.

His eyes were clear. He did not need a standing 8-count. He even knew how many fingers the Nashville Predators were holding aloft. Two, in this case, to Anaheim’s one.

Without Gibson, the Ducks might have been mercy-ruled.

The 23-year-old goaltender took a head shot from Mike Fisher that stunned him briefly. He took a slap shot from Victor Arvidsson that burrowed deep into his right shoulder, one of the few places a goalie’s armor doesn’t reach.

Nashville is in the middle of an economic boom, largely thanks to conventions. The Goaltender Battering Association of North America kicked off its annual meeting in front of, behind and all around Gibson.

He took spills on two Nashville goals that were nullified by the officials, bringing a torrent of protest, and yellow towels, to the Bridgestone Arena ice.

In the end he was beaten by a puck he didn’t see. Gibson looked for a rebound that he thought was in the left corner, but it actually bounced out to Roman Josi on the right side, and his power-play goal with 2:43 left beat the Ducks, 2-1. That also gave Nashville a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference finals.
