Based on what I heard from the commentators on the audio stream, Orpik “definitely stuck his leg out as Franzen was skating past him.”  Seems to me that with the reaction of the refs (admittedly flawed as often as not) and what I heard from the press booth, there was intent to injure (at the very least Orpik was beat bad by Franzen and was “only” trying to trip him).  Regardless, it’s douchey, dirty, and based on everything I heard from the game, it wasn’t even questionably an accident.

I find it difficult to take the outrage seriously. Had the situation been reversed, the vast majority of complainers would have been cheering Orpik’s injury with some variation of “he had it coming” justification.

Perhaps it was a belated retaliation from Orpik or completely accidental, I don’t know and don’t feel any overwhelming desire to speculate out of my backside. Regardless, no one wants to see players get seriously hurt in a pre-season game. Hopefully, that isn’t the case with Franzen even if he’s Swedish.

The most important thing is that the Penguins won. wink

Maybe Franzen made a quick move on Orpik and to get a piece of him, he stuck his knee out.  It’s possible you are right, but until some type of video comes out, you can’t say whether or not that was the case.  Not that it will matter because everyone’s viewpoint will be skewed however they want to be.

Even though yes, it was only audio and it may have been homerism shining through, but when the radio gents say it looked like Orpik stuck his leg out…

You Pens fans know damned well about how you’d feel when when someone knees another player, don’t you?

Of course they would.  He’s a dirtbag.

How exactly does that justify anything he does or did?

Funny. Paul wasn’t speculating at all or suggesting anything. It was actually all these trolls that inferred on their own that the hit was dirty and turned it into something.

Nobody?  What about the guy who either ruthlessly or carelessly throws his knee out in a pre-season game?

At best he has no regard for other players, at worst he was trying to injure.

The “vast majority” huh?  So you’re one of the very small majority who DOESN’T root for injuries to other teams’ key players?

Give me a *#$%@& break, moq.  You severely overstated here.  If you actually believe that the “vast majority” of KK readers are like that, then it seriously calls into question why you hang around the comments, seeing as how superior you are to the dirtbags with whom you share a pen.

I wrote about the majority of complainers, not the majority of KK readers. That’s not quite the same thing even if there’s a lot of Red Wings fans around here. With that qualification, I think you know that I’m correct.

And no, I don’t think it’s a sensible application of time to engage the hypocritical elements in debate on topics like this, which is why I try to avoid it. Fortunately, there are other topics where the commentary is a little less predictable and entrenched. Commentary uttered by people with a broader perspective than an automaton.

Considering a lot of the comments from you I see, I’d say you fail at avoiding engaging anybody in debate on topics like this, but rather you enjoy sitting atop a perch and passing judgement.

I wasn’t aware the NHL gave out 5 min Kneeing majors and GMC’s for clean hits.
