Joey MacDonald - The Adequate Goalie

from Andrew Johnson of The Hockey Writers,

As the team’s confidence in (Joey) MacDonald builds, they may unintentionally become lax in their defensive ways, expecting him to make the robbery saves and bail them out, to do what Howard has done all season long. We saw glimpses of this behavior in Sunday’s game against San Jose. At least twice, Sharks forwards entered the zone in the clear, and while MacDonald made the stops, it was the way in which he did so that has me alarmed.

Despite his statistically lofty play, MacDonald has not played well. His rebound control is atrocious. His over-aggressive Tim Thomas-style goaltending leaves the net completely exposed repeatedly throughout the game….

He has been nothing more than an adequate netminder in his 23 periods of hockey with Detroit this season, and can we even expect that to continue?

Don’t know who this Andrew Johnson guy is, but WHAT?

wow. while this definitely seems overly harsh to me, I have to admit that I’ve been less than impressed with his rebound control as well.

The thing is, he’s made big stops when they count and has won games because of it. No matter how it’s done, that’s ALL that matters.

With that said, even with the numbers and winning streak that Joey has produced, in terms of some of the details of his game (like rebound control), he still looks like a career AHL goalie to me. And with THAT said, he’s still putting up those numbers and still won those games and has therefore earned himself the backup spot.

Production is all that matters at the end of the day. Only Datsyuk gets points for style.

I read the whole article.  He spent pretty much the whole time making clear that Joe Mac is NOT Tim Thomas nor will he ever be.

He also took great measures to make sure to tell the rest of the teams in the league how to beat him.  Something about make a rink wide pass, deke a little and enjoy the easy goal.

I bet Andy and Ryan spend their off days in airport bathrooms tapping their feet…

From the article:

My point is, statistics alone can sure be inaccurate.

He’s seeing the proverbial trees for the forest.  The Ws matter more.  As a Wings fan, he should know that as well.

Andrew Johnson deserves to be impeached for that column.

No kidding.  I’m not really sure of the purpose of the article.  If a team’s starting goalie goes down in the playoffs they’re in trouble?  Is that it.  Because I think everyone’s pretty aware of that.  And yes, feel free to laud St. Louis’ wonderful tandem which I suppose is a great insurance policy as they both can’t play at the same time.  Also, as good as Elliott’s numbers have been this year, the playoffs are a different animal and Elliott’s career 4 playoff starts, 4.14 GAA, and .853 sv% would hardly fill me with confidence if I were a Blues fan and Halak went down.

So really, was there any point to this article other than trying to pick at Wings’ fans to drum up clicks on to the hockeywriters site?

... as long as he makes the easy stops, something Conklin failed to do this season…

I stopped reading there.  Anyone who’s paid attention should know better than that.

Coming into the situation J-Mac faced, with a record on the line, but, more important than any record, POINTS. He has been able to win. Nothing else matters.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Umm, adequate is about as good as it gets for a backup.  Most teams are looking for an adequate backup goalie.  There is a serious drought in the goalie department this year.

Joey MacDonald has done a more than adequate job in this stretch.  Compared to the alternative we have seen a much better game overall.  His rebound control is much better than Conklin’s has ever been, even when he was with Pittsburgh and being hailed by hockey writers as a possible repacement for the flower.  Mac’s catching glove is good.  He maintains a square position to the shooter.  He does not go down early.

All in all, the doofus writer is comparing him to top starting goalies and that is not even close to a realistic comparison.

What is with the diggers today? First there was Lambert with the tired Detroit homicide meme. Then there is Andrew Johnson (no love for my impeachment crack on President’s day?). Now comes Mr. Obvious, Drew Sharp with this headline: Red Wings’ home winning streak will mean more if Stanley Cup follows.

Duh.

First I thought about pointing out capt. obvious and giving him names, but I saw that it was already taken care of.  Still gave me a good laugh while reading it.

I think it’s a good sign if diggers don’t have other things to write about. Aslong there are no changes to write about, it means the machine is running as it should.  Due that fact I’m a happy Red Wings fan.

Joey Mac’s record this season speaks for itself.

Howard *does* have to bail his skaters out often, yes.  However, Joey Mac has had to already as well and been up to the challenge.

Poor Wings.  They’ll have to make do with adequate back up and starting goalies that consistently bail them out when their D gets lax.

If only they could have 2 inadequate backup goaltenders and no starter like Chicago.

@Captain Dennis - I enjoyed the Andrew Johnson crack. I have a MA in History focused on mid to late 19th century US History. I don’t think there are nearly enough Andrew Johnson jokes, even when they seem to write themselves. Well done!

The article doesn’t seem like trolling, it just seems like he is stating the obvious. Everyone knows that Mac is a fringe NHL/AHL goalie, and that like most any goalie in that category, in his career he’s played best at both levels when he’s gotten to play regularly.

He’s earned the right to be Howard’s backup the rest of the way. It’s a good pay bump for him, and given the way he has played this season, the team will have more confidence playing in front of him once a week or so than they have and would in front of Conklin.

Easy decision to make, nothing controversial going on here… only the slappiest and uneducated of Wings fans ever thought this meant Joey was a legit, long-term starting option.
