Joel Quenneville And Stan Bowman Will Return Next Season

added 12:38pm, Lazerus tweets,

"We’re not tethered to the past. This has been a very disappointing year and our expectations are incredibly high. We’re not going to deviate from those expectations. But I believe both Stan and Joel are the guys that are going to bring this back."

The progress of young players was a point in Quenneville's favor. McDonough: "I know at one point, that was kind of a knock on Joel, that he wasn’t proficient at coaching young players. Nothing could be further from the truth."

I am not surprised by this.  Chicagoland thought they’d be gone, but I think it was more a good story than anything.

via Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times,

The surprise meeting with reporters before practice ends speculation about whether the Blackhawks could make major changes after finishing last in the Central Division. Rather than move on from the GM and/or coach who led the franchise to three Stanley Cups and eight straight playoff appearances from 2010-17, the Hawks will stay the course and hope to return to contention next fall.

Quenneville has two years and $12 million remaining on the contract he signed with the Blackhawks in 2016. The second-winningest coach in NHL history would’ve been popular with other teams if he left Chicago, but that won’t happen now for at least another season.
