Jody Shelley With An Unexpected Punch To Andrew Alberts

With about 7 minutes left in the game in which Vancouver had a 6-1 lead, Shelley decides to throw a punch or two when not expected.

Two videos, first the TSN view then the Flyers broadcast view is below…

I hate Shelley, and i hate the flyers even more, but….. I don’t see anything wrong with this.  It sure as hell doesn’t feel good when someone comes into a scrum and crosschecks you in the back like Tanner Glass does to Shelley to start the whole thing off.

If you get involved in these scrums, as Alberts does, then you better be ready to get physical.  Shelley is in there doing what his role on the team dictates.  The fact that Alberts got knocked out cold is the only reason this is being discussed.

Broadway quality acting out of Alberts there.

Shelley has a hearing with the NHL today.

Plus, don’t forget, he was recently suspended for two games because of this hit.

Interesting…I wonder if Shelley were to one-punch Ericsson to the ice what your reaction would be.

Scrums and shoving happen but it’s extremely rare to see someone wind up and toss a full punch, glove off in the middle of one. Even Betts was telling Shelley to knock it off.

Gotta say something is missing, what was the context?  Did they scrum earlier in the game?  Shelley is a goon, don’t get me wrong, but he usually follows the “code”, ie. He’s not a “dirty” player, but sometimes maybe he’s a little unaware of his goonery and strength, like a huge dog that thinks its a puppy.  I’ll venture a guess Alberts was provoking him and it was snowballing all game and we just saw the end result, still doesn’t warrant a sucker punch though and he should be held to the same standard as anyone else (Lucic).  His last suspended hit, I think you can tell by his body language (and the fact he offered an apology at the bench after the hit) that he was disappointed with himself for that.  I hope he doesn’t keep building up this reputation of being like this.

Cheap and dirty punch, but par for the course for the flyers organization.

However, it was refreshing to hear the philly announcer refer to it correctly as a “cheap shot”.
