JJ’s Three Cheers, 11/4/10: Mason, Matsumoto, Jovanovski

The daily toast to last night’s stars around the league (with an extra day to quickly catch up on, thanks to an annoyance in another sector of my life that was completely beyond my control). Now then…

From Tuesday’s games, JJ’s Three Cheers go out to:

***Mathieu Garon of the Columbus Blue Jackets, for a 29-save, 3-0 shutout over Montreal
**Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom, for a 36-save, 1-0 blanking of San Jose
*And big time cheers to Vancouver’s Raffi Torres, whose hat trick led the Canucks to a 4-3 win over Edmonton.

On to last night, with a few highlights to throw around, as usual:

***Cheers to Atlanta’s Chris Mason, who held the fort enough (to the tune of 52 saves on 55 Panther shots) to backstop the Thrashers to a 4-3 decision over Florida. Mason’s teammates managed their four scores on just 23 shots of their own, so his efforts in net were much-needed simply to keep Atlanta in the game Niclas Bergfors notched the deciding goal just past the midway point of the third period.

**Cheers to Carolina’s Jon Matsumoto, who tallied his first career NHL goal and, later, added another for good measure, in a 7-2 Hurricanes rout over the visiting New York Islanders. Eleven different Carolina skaters registered points in this one, the second straight blowout loss for New York after a 6-1 shellacking in Philadelphia over the weekend.

*And big time cheers to Phoenix defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who waited until his 15th NHL season to record his first career hat trick, finally accomplishing the feat last night in a 4-3 win over Nashville. Jovanovski opened the scoring in the first, posted his second goal of the night (and of the season) in the middle period and capped off the memorable evening with a power play tally in the third to complete the trick. It took a while, but the man many have long called “Jovo-Cop” for his intimidating physical prowess can now add the title of “sniper” to his long list of career accolades (if only for a night).

A quick anti-cheers to me today, actually, for lacking the capability to stay awake for late games during the week anymore. It just doesn’t happen. Prior to last night’s Tampa Bay/Anaheim contest, for which, all I can say is a point on the road is always a good point, I had already slipped into dream world. I hadn’t a fighting chance, especially not with the day I had yesterday. Booooooo on JJ…

Minor league update for all Southeast affiliates coming later…
