JJ’s Three Cheers: 10/21/10

Today’s three cheers for last night’s top performers in NHL action:

***Cheers to Chicago’s Marty Turco, who made 36 saves and held the fort for the ‘Hawks in the shootout for a 2-1 decision over the Vancouver Canucks. Turco only had to make one save in the breakaway tiebreaker, on Mikael Samuelsson, but Roberto Luongo stopped none at the other end and the Blackhawks earned the extra point in turn. Luongo was good during the actual game, making 31 saves of his own and earning third star honors, but what’s going on with his early season numbers? A 3.38 goals-against and an .888 save percentage isn’t exactly the Bobby Lu Canucks fans expect, nor is the 2-3-2 mark for their club. Surely, it’s only a matter of time before he (and the team) turns it around. (Right?)

**Cheers to Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings, whose two-point performance led his club to a 4-3 decision over Carolina. Kopitar scored his first of the season early in the second to give the Kings a 3-2 lead and assisted on the eventual game-winner, Andrei Loktionov’s first NHL goal, after Hurricanes rookie Jeff Skinner tied things with the first of his career. L.A. is off to a fine 4-1 start but will likely be without stalwart defenseman Drew Doughty, at least for the start of their upcoming road trip, after he was lost to an upper-body injury in the first period of this one.

*And big time cheers to Columbus goalie Steve Mason, who backstopped the Blue Jackets to their first home win of the young season. The Jackets got a pair of goals from captain Rick Nash in victory and Mason held off the Anaheim attack, making 31 saves in the 3-1 win.

Fanhouse’s Chris Botta is running a blogger survey series this season “in an effort to provide an up-close view” of the clubs each participant covers and I was happy to provide the content for the Tampa Bay Lightning. NHL Blogger Survey: Know Your Tampa Bay Lightning is up and running now so, please, take a minute to give it a look. (You’ll be introduced to the mysterious Dad Boychards for your efforts!)
