Kukla's Korner Hockey

This morning’s three cheers for those that shined in yesterday’s action:
***Cheers to Anaheim’s Corey Perry, who broke a 2-2 tie late in the third with his third goal of the season to lead the Ducks to a win over Phoenix. Perry also managed an assist in the game and was a plus-3 for Anaheim, who got 36 saves from goaltender Jonas Hiller in victory. Speaking of…
**Cheers to Hiller as well, for his substantial efforts against the Coyotes, yes, but also for his super sweet, jet-black, Darth Vader-ish goalie mask. (The Goalie Guild chronicled this odds-on favorite for equipment piece of the year a few weeks back.) In an era where complex mask designs reign supreme, the simplicity (and total bad-assness) of Hiller’s face-saver is refreshing. Here, here!
*And big time cheers to Vancouver’s Mason Raymond, who had a pair of goals – including this third period marker which proves, once again, that it doesn’t suck playing with the Sedins – to carry the Canucks to a 5-1 pasting of the Carolina Hurricanes. Raymond added an assist for Vancouver, who improved to 2-2-1 on the young season.
Carolina’s still nine days away from their home opener, believe it or not, after opening the year in Helsinki, Finland and they still have visits to San Jose, Los Angeles and Phoenix on the docket before the RBC Center in Raleigh officially opens for business in 2010-11. Their opponent in that one? Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Ick. Tough stretch for the ‘Canes.
We tape a new episode of The Bolts Beat this afternoon and then it’s straight to the St. Pete Times Forum, where the Lightning will host the Dallas Stars, looking to rebound after Saturday’s 6-0 beatdown in Sunrise against the Panthers. Chat up tonight’s game with me on Twitter, where you can expect my usual shenanigans.
