via Ansar Khan of Mlive,
Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard was injured with 7:17 to play in the first period Friday in Columbus and has left the game.
Howard was shaken up following a shot by Derick Brassard and needed some assistance getting off the ice.
He had been replaced by Joey MacDonald.
Howard was on his knees and took a shot that either hit him in the inside of his knee, inner thigh or perhaps his hand.
added 7:56pm, Lidstrom after the first period thought Howard got hit by a shot, but now doesn’t know what happened.
added 8:02pm, Multiple reports state bruised knee. You folks buying that?
added 8:48pm, video of the injury is below
added 9:35pm, Holmstrom out with right wrist/hand injury. Happened with about 8 minutes left in the 3rd period.

For the record, I am not buying the bruised knee report, not after what Lids said.

What? No breaking news on NHL.com? I guess Howard isn’t a big enough star.

Looks like the puck hit the vulnerably open area of the inside of his right knee.
Damn you, JObu.

Paul I buy it. I’m a rec league goalie who has taken a few shots that looked similar to that and if he got hit on the kneecap especially on the inside part of the knee he would go down like that. It swells almost immediately and the pain can be severe. It’s really hard to walk or skate as well.

Wings broadcast team says Holland told them knee has some swelling, xrays were negative.

Thanks moocat, maybe reading too much into what Lidstrom said.

Yep, been there done that before and it kills. You get dead leg for about 5 minutes and depending on how his padding was situated, it could hit bone. I know my knee-pads (worn under normal goalie pads) protect the cap, but right where they flex is open and depending how his knee was situated there, it could hit right on bone or the very least the side. Think charlie horse but on your knee.

Ugh.
At this point we’ll be lucky if they just have to be the Detroit Griffins, and not the Detroit GriffinWalleye. ‘cause that’s where they’re heading at this rate…

Not good.
McCollum was playing poorly enough he got sent down to the ECHL before all the injuries hit. I don’t think he’s at all ready for primetime. I’d put more faith in Pearce right now.

His stats are pretty similar, actually.

Anyone else really cursing Daniel Larsson right now?

Dov Grumet-Morris.
He’s our man.
His name will look so cool on the Cup, alongside the names of Lindsey, Howe, Gretzky, Orr, Sawchuck.
