He can't say he doesn't trust the two goalies, because he might have to trust them up until the trade deadline. He can't say he plans to trade one of the young defensemen, because that's just not how you treat players currently on your team.
But he has to know, right?
Nill defends his two goalies by saying they won 25 games apiece last season, and he has a point. But the numbers say Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi were middle-of-the-pack statistically and won games largely because of a great deal of goal support....So, the guess is Nill is looking for a change. That opportunity might come later when Lehtonen and Niemi have burned through some of their remaining salary and are more attractive in a possible trade. It could come if either or both have good regular seasons and become more attractive in a possible trade.
