Jeff Petry Likes Montreal, Undecided On His Future

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,

As the Canadiens cleaned out their lockers Thursday in Brossard, Petry talked about the history and tradition of the team and expressed admiration for the structure of the team.

“I’m not going to make a decision in the next few days,” said Petry, who noted that the question of free agency has been bouncing around since he signed a one-year deal with the Oilers last summer.

Petry, who earned a shade over $3 million this season, could be looking at long-term offers for as much as $6 million a year, but he indicated that money is only one factor in deciding where to play next season. Having enjoyed his first taste of playoff hockey — he was the Canadiens’ most consistent defenceman in the postseason — he’ll be looking at teams capable of contending, which will be one point in Montreal’s favour.

There may also be an opportunity for Petry to play in his hometown of Detroit. He said playing for the Red Wings was a dream when he was a youngster, but added that going home would have its “ups and downs.”

Somehow I get the feeling that he doesn’t want to be in Detroit. Maybe that’s why Holland and co. never attempted to snag this dude during the deadline (he would have given a huge boost compared to Zidlicky imho). But I think this team is set on buying Green and if not him they will trade for Phaneuf.

Everyone is over-reading into what he is saying. He is saying a lot of words without actually meaning anything. Of course he has to say he loved Montreal even if he didn’t, and of course he can’t just say “OMG, I want to play in Detroit so bad, please please please sign me.
Relax everyone, wait till free agency.

Green.

Oh joy.

More soft, can’t defend, defense.

Actually, I think you have it backwards.  He knows Montreal wants him back, so saying he’s excited by the Detroit opportunity, too, probably helps up the bids.

I’m sure playing anywhere has its ups and downs.

I remember reading on this here website that Dan Petry commented on how impressed his son was with Montreal and the atmosphere there.  I do think he really liked it there and it’s not him just paying lip service to it.
