Asked Wednesday if he follows hockey analytics, Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Jay Harrison wryly replied: “No, I just follow pucks.”
When the same query was forwarded to fellow NHLers Tyler Seguin and Joel Ward, both admitted they haven’t examined hockey’s new numbers game very closely.
At the same time, to a man, all three agreed that the concept of analytics has a place in the sport — one that likely will balloon as players, teams and fans become more educated in this era of advanced stats.
“It definitely has a future in the game,” Harrison said during the BioSteel Hockey Camp at St. Mike’s Arena. “You can’t stop progress.”
