Jarome Iginla’s Last Chance?

from Allan Muir ofSports Illustrated,

I can’t help but think this is a series that Jarome Iginla will take to his grave if the B’s don’t pull it out.

It might not eat away at him quite like Calgary’s seven-game loss to Tampa Bay in the 2004 Stanley Cup Final, but he probably had a sense back then that there was still plenty of time to get his name on the mug.

There’s no way he’s feeling that security now. Iginla has to know that this could be his last chance for a ring.

So where’s the urgency? He scored a late goal in Game 3 on the deflection of an Andrei Meszaros point blast, but that was his only shot on net in the contest, matching his total from Game 2. He’s been ineffective because he’s chasing the puck instead of winning the battles and daring Montreal’s overmatched defense to stop him. Iginla has more to give…but he’s running out of time to give it.

more on both the games tonight, Boston/Montreal and Anaheim/LA....

Think Boston would want him back next season?

It would be interesting to see if they can fit him in (if they do want him).  I recently read (on WingingItInMotown, I think) that the only reason they could fit him under the cap was because most of his bonus-laden contract could be deferred to next year, so they’re going to be starting something like $3-4M in the hole next season.  Depending on how high the cap goes, they simply might not be able to justify doing that again.  It makes sense this year if you think he’s “the piece” that puts you over the top, with the idea that maybe you win this year with him and then he retires, but his presence doesn’t end up putting them over the top do you want to take that chance again?

It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

Iggy has really slowed down the past couple of years. His tenure in Boston has shown he can still be an impact player but he is not the force he once was. It would be very satisfying to see him take control of a game and push his team to a win but that becomes less and less likely as time passes.

If he does not win with Boston this year I am not sure he will have another chance, as it will be a challenge to fit him into the teams plans under the cap. I cannot think of a better fit in the league than Boston for Iggy.

I really liked him and respected him in Calgary - his talent shown on that team.  I’ve been less than impressed since he went to Boston.  Still a key player, but he seems to get lost at times around a bunch of other key players.

Would I want him on the Wings?  I don’t know.  I almost see him sort of like a Bertuzzi; both are slowing down, too.

Iginla got 61 points this year and Bertuzzi got 16 points.  The only person who might see those as similar totals is dyslexic.  Iginla today is far better than Bertuzzi today - which isn’t surprising since Iginla yesterday was far better than Bertuzzi yesterday as well.

I’m not comparing him to the Bertuzzi of today.  I’m going back a few years.

Maybe you simply need some reading comprehension.
